Events at Starved Rock


Guided Tours

Trails are open every day of the year from 7 a.m. until sunset.  Visitors can hike on their own by following stationary park maps and brown park signs at every intersection and parking lot.

Visitors who wish to have a more personal, ranger led hike
can register for guided tours throughout the year!

Ranger Led Guided Tours
  • June-November:  9 a.m. on most Saturdays and Sundays
  • December-March:  8 a.m. on the 1st and 2nd Sundays of the month
Pre-Registration Required

Visitors who are planning a family get together, scout outing, or meeting up with friends can contact the Natural Resource Coordinator,  Lisa Sons to see if arranging a private tour is possible:  groups must have 10 minimum to 40 maximum persons attending, timeframes cannot interfere with already scheduled public hikes, programs, or special events, and staff must be available to lead the tour.  Email Lisa Sons at lisa.sons@illinois.gov.

Starved Rock Saplings Story Time for Tots!  

The 2nd Saturday of each month December through March at 9 a.m. 

Free for parents and children ages 3-10 years old.  Storybook, craft, and activity included. Register through Park Naturalist Lisa Sons by emailing lisa.sons@illinois.gov

  • December:  Owls
  • January: Bald Eagles
  • February:  Animal Tracks and Scat
  • March:  The Maple Tree and Maple Syruping
