INTRODUCTION: Ray Norbut Fish & Wildlife Area is characterized as an ideal hunting area for forest game species. This site is also rich in archeological and historic value and is presently a bald eagle winter roosting area along the bluffs of the Illinois River.  Separate Hunter Fact Sheets are available for the Dutch Creek and East Hannibal Units of the Ray Norbut State Fish and Wildlife Area. Active habitat management will be occurring throughout the year on the site. 

LOCATION: Ray Norbut Fish & Wildlife Area is located five miles east of Griggsville off Route 107 and two miles south of Valley City along the Illinois River in Pike County.

SITE REGULATIONS:

  1. A Windshield Card is required to hunt all species at this site. These are available online at dnr2.illinois.gov/Windshieldcard. Navigate to "Hunting/Trapping" and then "Public Hunting Areas" to print a card.  Hunters will be required to return to this website prior to February 15th each year to record harvest information.
  2. It is unlawful to construct or to use any tree stand using a device that pierces or cuts the bark of the tree. Only one portable stand may be used and must be labeled with hunters name, address, and telephone number.
  3. No centerfire rifles are allowed. 
  4. Firearm Deer: A quota of hunters will be filled by special permit; drawing in Springfield.  Muzzleloader Deer: Pike County Muzzleloader Permit required.  Not valid at site during the second portion of the regular firearm deer season.                           
    Late-Winter Deer Season: Open/Closed by public announcement each fall  A quota of hunters will be filled on a sign-in sheet at the office each morning. Pike County permit or Ray Norbut SFWA permit required.
    Archery Deer: No quota; statewide permit required.

*Trapping is also allowed for furbearing mammals. A special trapping permit is issued through a site drawing.
