Function:The Commission will work with IHPA and ISBE to promote education and awareness of slavery and the African slave trade.
Term:3 years and until successor is appointed and qualified; initial members shall have staggered terms

Qualifications:Chosen with regard to broad geographical representation and ethnic diversity and who have served actively in organizations that educate the public on the history of the African slave trade, the contributions of African-Americans to our society, and civil rights issues.

Composition:15 members total: 6 public members appointed by the Governor; 2 members appointed by the President of the Senate; 1 member appointed by the Minority Leader of the Senate; 2 members appointed by the Speaker of the House of Representatives; 1 member appointed by the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives; 3 ex-officio members: State Superintendent of Education or designee (ex officio); Director of Commerce and Economic Opportunity or designee (ex officio); Director of Historic Preservation Agency or designee (ex officio).
